For me, Proactiv never worked. I wouldn’t use it because I didn’t like that it made my face sting and made it super dry. Long story short, I stopped using it. My doctor tried to help by prescribing a gel for me but that also didn’t work. He would scold me and tell me I had acne because I wasn’t washing my face and because I was eating too much chocolate and French fries. I stopped using what he gave me as well.
Fast forward a year and my mom came across a skin care product from Florida that was guaranteed to work. The product was literally the chunkiest and most abrasive scrub I’ve ever used! I remember it having a super strong scent that made my eyes water. Surprise, surprise, that didn’t work either.
For a while I just suffered. Nothing else I tried had worked, so why bother?
Around sophomore year, one of my doctors decided to put me on birth control for another medical issue and my face began clearing up. Obviously it wasn’t instantaneous and it wasn’t all at once, but over time I really noticed my face getting better. My skin was still far from flawless but instead of having many active breakouts at any given time, I only had a few here and there.
Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures to show you. During that time I had a very low self-esteem and would refuse to be photographed.
As a teenager this was very traumatic for me. I was always so insecure and thought everyone was only looking at my imperfections. When this was happening, no one knew how to help me. My mom had not a clue and I didn’t know the first thing about skin care. My mom bought me whatever said it would work. This is why I started this whole blog. I want to share information that would have been so valuable to me back then if I had only knew. I want to help people feel confident in their skin and not feel alone if they are struggling with their skin.
Today, my skin is pretty clear with an occasional breakout. I am on a skin care regimen but I haven’t found my Holy Grail products yet. I am currently trying to find the best combination of products that works well for me.
