Myth #1: A blackhead is dirt inside the pore.
False! Blackheads are called open comedones. Blackheads are actually clogged pores. They are black because the oxidize when exposed to oxygen. (Think of a banana when it's left out)
Myth #2: Oil can be controlled with harsh and drying ingredients such as alcohol.
False! Using ingredients such as alcohol strips the skin. This actually leads to excess oil production because the skin has nothing there to protect it. Using alcohol can cause breakouts as well as dehydrated, irritated, and sensitized skin.
Myth #3: Sugary and refined foods cause acne.
Misinterpretation. Sugary foods and deep fried delicacies don't cause acne directly, but they can cause excess sebum (oil) production which could lead to acne.
Myth #4: Sunscreens increase oil production.
False! There are so many different formulas of sunscreen nowadays that don't cause more oil to be produced. Look for a physical sunscreen that's oil-free or mattifying.
Myth #5: Stay away from fabric softeners.
True! Try not to use fabric softeners on pillowcases and sheets. The mail ingredients are fragrance and beef lard both of which can irritate the skin and clog pores.
Myth #6: There's nothing to control oily skin.
False! There is hope. Oily skin is a very manageable skin condition. Speak to an esthetician who can analyze your skin and recommend the best products for you and your skin.
